This was all that can be expected of a YA fantasy. Our protagonist is an orphan who is in love with her best friend (who is more attractive and popular). She accidentally discovers magical powers and is swept to a more glamorous world. She meets a powerful and attractive older man who is (gasp!) interested in her! She thinks of her friend, but .... it's the Darkling! But no, he has secret plans that are evil. To thwart them, she runs away, goes on a bit of adventure, is rescued by her best friend, almost saves the day, nevermind, ruin is in order. But then, at the last minute, manages to save herself from the bad guy, rescue her friend (who, btw, realizes now that they've always been in love), and hide away on more adventure. I loved it.
