The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #1)

My inner child is absolutely devastated that I didn't read this series when I was a kid. Percy Jackson was one of those series that was always there, just on the periphery of my social conscious. I knew I should read it, but for one reason or another I gravitated to other things instead.

Thankfully, as an adult who likes reviewing books for fun in my spare time, I have absolutely no shame about reading the series now, even if it was originally intended for a younger audience. In some ways, I think I might have even enjoyed it more as an adult.
I'm a huge fan of Greek mythology. (I may or may not have filled electives in high school and college with classes on mythology; just like I may or may not have obsessed over shows like Xena and Hercules in my teenage years.) I had a great time comparing my own personal knowledge of Greek mythology against the ways that Riordan weaves the stories into Percy's larger adventure.
It's such a fun way to introduce Greek mythology to children and teens while staying entertaining for adults as well! The mythology remains faithful to the original stories, but it feels fresh and fun here as each character is full of personality and charm. The world is full of magic and wonder and I never once felt bored as the characters explored within it.
Speaking of characters full of personality, Percy Jackson himself is one of my new faves in terms of characterization. He's brave, loyal and hilarious and his friendship with Grover and Annabeth has quickly become a favorite for me. Also, can I just say that I think it's so cute that Riordan based Percy on his son, who had been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia? I think it's so awesome that Percy gets to sort of stand apart from other heroes in stories as a champion for those kids forevermore.
When I finished reading this book, I immediately went and told my 11 year old nephew that he absolutely had to read this book so I had someone to talk to about it. I'm proud to call myself a Percy Jackson fan and will be continuing the rest of the series shortly!
★★★★★ = 5 stars!

I recently read the first one and was quite pleased with it. I have the second one waiting on my bookshelf haha. Enjoy!

Percy Jackson is probably one of my favorite series ever. For me it's on the same level as Harry Potter and Narnia. I really hope you enjoy them!!Ps: the movie sucked. No surprise there lol

I've heard such great things about this series, I'm so glad you enjoyed them Rachelle! I can't wait. The kid in me has been craving a read full of magic and wonder like Harry Potter.
I did hear that the movie wasn't so great. Sucks when that happens.
I read the books before I watch the movie. Great experience. I am just done wif book 3. Hope u enjoy it!
i have not read nor watch them but my elder sister was in it for a school production. she was the lightning queen! how r u all today / tonight. also what time is it where you are?? xoxo
@ Min: Thank you! @ Tania: That's cool that your sister was in a production of it!
@ Brittney - it means "Review to Come" when I finish reading it in a few days. :)
Oh ok! I've seen it used by many people but never made the connection. I love this book series. Happy reading!

Great review Bentley! I felt the same since I read this series as an adult. I think I appreciated it more!

Yeah I definitely think that was the case for me! I loved Greek (and Norse) mythology growing up so this was great fun for me.
Alyssa Helvar ♡ wrote: "Stunning review, Bentley! *whispers* I still haven't read this one yet..."Alyssa!!! Omg you have to read this! I avoided it for years because I thought it would never live up to the hype, but I really think it was awesome. I hope you give it a go soon. :)
Great review Bentley! I also didn't read these as a child (nor did I read Harry Potter) & so I get you feeling a little left out on that front haha! :)

There are just so many books out there! It's incredible that we can miss out on some huge series for too many years.
This is a great review !! I also read this series a little late because I thought I was too old to read it at the time but I still tried and ended up loving it so much. And I had no idea Percy was based on the author's son this is so cute, you just gave me another reason to love this.

I missed it as a kid and then thought I was too much of a cool, aloof teenager to read it when I was still in school. Thankfully as an adult I have zero shame and don't care what I read. :P
I see the promotions for these movies all the time and want to watch one, but then think I need to read the books first!
This series is the reason I'm so obsessed with Greek mythology! I hope you enjoy the rest of the books!
James wrote: "I see the promotions for these movies all the time and want to watch one, but then think I need to read the books first!"That was one of the reasons why I finally wanted to read the books. I've yet to see the movie, but I've heard it didn't do the book justice.

Thank you Chelsea!
I first read the Percy Jackson 5 years ago and fell in love immediately. Percy is one of my fave characters ever and I agree that it's awesome that Riordan based him on his own son! I actually just started rereading the series after seeing the musical (which actually stays pretty true to the book, unlike the movie which I still love despite it being a terrible book to film adaptation - the second movie is a better adaption than the first) and I'm remembering just how much I love Percy's story. Great review and I hope you enjoy the rest of the series as much as you did this one!

I actually just..."I had no idea there was a PJ musical! That's so cool! Oh man, I agree about the film to book adaptation. I watched the first movie right after finishing the first book and thought it was atrocious how many things were changed for no reason. I'm about to start book 2 this weekend and I can't wait to continue the journey!
It was the same for me where they were always just kind of there, but I never took interest in them until like a year and a half ago where my friend litteraly forced the series into my hands and I read them and LOVED THEM. Although I tried watching the movies after and couldn't get though the first five minutes it was so so bad.
Avery wrote: "It was the same for me where they were always just kind of there, but I never took interest in them until like a year and a half ago where my friend litteraly forced the series into my hands and I ..."Yup, the movie was definitely not good! I think in a lot of ways my obsession with Harry Potter just ended up overshadowing Percy Jackson when I was younger. I'm glad I can still appreciate them and experience the magic now!
I remember reading the first book in grade 8. Then when I went to visit my cousin, I saw that she had the entire series......so instead of socializing with my family I binged read the series. Was totally worth it.

It's off Broadway and unfortunately closing in less than a week, but I am hoping for an extension or a transfer! But yeah, they clearly decided to make the movie appeal more to Hollywood than to the book, which I get but I also find it unnecessary for them to have made as many changes as they did! Have fun with book 2!! I hope you like it as much as the first one! :)
