really liked it

If you are a fan of Monica Burns’ Rockwood series, you’ll be thrilled with her Reluctant Rogue series. Historical romance with achingly real characters and lots of steamy chemistry. Phoebe and Gideon will quickly draw you in. Passion brings these two together but pride threatens to keep them apart.
Phoebe suffered through her marriage to a drunk, philandering and cruel husband. She’d not known any kindness. Gideon felt he’d been made a fool of by a previous object of his affection. He had a distrustful view of women as a result. But a brief encounter between these two in a moonlit garden left them bewildered. For Phoebe, it was her first taste of pleasure. The first intimate touch she’d ever experienced that hadn’t involved some sort of cold humiliation. For Gideon, Phoebe had an innocence and fragility that made him want to pull her close and keep her safe. But then he discovered she was an American heiress. Another woman only interested in wealth and a title in his eyes. Still, neither could get the other out of their thoughts.
Five years later they are brought together again. The attraction is still the same but Phoebe and Gideon have changed. Gideon is disillusioned, angry, and afraid of being made to look the fool. Phoebe is strong and spirited and has something to hide. Their reunion is nothing like their first encounter. Both teeter between sadness and happiness in their fear to accept and declare their feelings for one another. Which is where the delicious angst begins that will keep readers turning the pages. Watching these two unravel their misinterpretations and mistakes as they fall in love makes for a really emotionally satisfying read. I like the HEA ending but I also like a little headache and humor along the way. Phoebe and Gideon’s stubborn pride and insecurities were keeping them apart. Still, the harder the struggle, the more rewarding the ending. And that HEA ending was a sure thing from the beginning. These two couldn’t keep their hands off each other! Every scene between them was electric and filled with sexual tension. The plot is page-turner worthy but the chemistry between these two is what crackles most. I look forward to more of this deeply satisfying series.
