A book that many people know of and few people read - both for good reason. People know of it because the basic idea is compelling - stranded on an island, man vs. nature - timeless. People don't read it because it is long, dated, detailed, and, most of all displays a mindset that is very disturbing to a modern reader. Robinson Crusoe is a typical European man of the 18th century and this a valuable insight into that time period. He is also curious and fearful, which can be refreshing. Not a book for everybody, but if you want to see the origins of the novel, a classic survival tale, and the way the world was truly viewed, give it a try.
