I found this detective tale in rural Arizona to be pedestrian and not very engaging. The is 10th in a series of 14 featuring Cochise County Sheriff Joanna Brady starts with the poisoning murder of an artist just before a gallery opening. An investigator from the Attorney Generals office of Washington State reveals that the woman was a whistleblower in witness protection during preparation of a big corruption case against a private corrections contractor. The love-hate dynamic between the two on the case seemed stilted and stereotyped to me, and the mystery gets solved more by typical police procedural approaches than through any special detective work.
