really liked it

I learned from this version of the book that there are actually several versions of Frank's diary: 1) the original one she wrote as if the diary were her best friend and she was sharing her inner most secrets; 2) In 1944 Anne heard over the BBC that the Dutch were being encouraged to keep diaries to record what life was like under occupation, and so she began an edited and revised version of her original entries to make them better for public consumption and to further explain things she wrote earlier; and 3) Her father survives the war (the only family member to do so) and he takes her two versions and writes a 3rd eliminating Anne's 'secret' thoughts about the others in hiding with her and also about sex. Her father thought it inappropriate for others to read the developing sexual life of a 14 year old and he thought her critical comments about those around her were at time offensive (Anne didn't like her mother for example) so he edited out all those comments to make Anne look better. The father's version (#3) is the version that was most read 50 years ago, but now people want to know the 'real' Anne so prefer the "definitive' edition which includes all her comments. Anne is just a typical young teen despite all that is happening around her - she sees the world and family from the point of view of a typical teenager even though in an atypical situation. She develops as a teen even without contact with peers to reinforce behavior and thinking. Anne is very opinionated and strong willed. She came so close to surviving the war - the Allies had already stormed Normandy and were advancing along the coast and through France when she is caught and sent to the death camps. She was so hopeful about life after the war, one can only wonder what she thought and would have written in her last couple of months in fascist captivity.
