it was amazing
bookshelves: reallygoodbooks

This is one of the most important books I have read. It dissects the Pentateuch with a scholarly scalpel and reveals a great deal about its history and evolution. The current old testament is clearly cobbled together for political reasons, largely to unite antagonist Hebrew factions as they face outside enemies. One of the really cool things Friedman does at one point is to reprint several stories in different fonts. In this way the different traditions, E, J, etc, stand out in clear relief and the correctness of his hypothesis hits you square in the face. If this marvelous book were more widely read, and appreciated, there would be a lot less strive with fundamentalists and biblical literalists.
