really liked it

I am not sure why I picked this up or what I expected, which was maybe a good thing because low expectations came in handy during the first chapter or two. However, once I decided to stick with it I really quite enjoyed this novel set during the Civil War, mostly in an insane asylum, told through several voices. Imagine being completely in your right mind but being sent to the state mental hospital for refusing to obey your husband. And being unable to defend yourself in court? Imagine being 12 years old and living on an island, at the asylum no less, with no other children, an inattentive father and a distracted (probably laudanum addicted) mother. Imagine coming to this island to recover from the horrors of war. Imagine a rather rigid doctor out to prove his methodology, who is a distracted father and husband. Sprinkle in a few other crazy people for color, stir and let the stories unwind. There will be some surprise.
