Helprin is a master of painting with words, and flowery metaphor abounds in this novel. It's beautiful, though heavy handed. The book, ostensibly the story of two young lovers who defy societal and familial expectations, is also a love letter to NYC as it existed just after WWII. Helprin's storytelling is good but not at its best here, but the book is engaging and the language enthralling so while I don't think this novel will last long in my memory it was a nice ride.
