The Abandoned is a prelude to the series of Amelia who goes around restoring gravestones and avoiding ghosts. While this story had very little to do with Amelia, it still set up a bit about what she does and her special gift for seeing ghosts.

Well crafted and interesting, I felt the story could have focused a bit more on the ghosts and the haunting of Ree but it is a novella so guess there wasn't enough time to develop it more. Ree is at the beside of a woman who has been confined to a psyche hospital her entire life - never once being allowed out even though she was perfectly sane. Because of the atrocities done to both this woman and her mother, both ghosts attach to Ree to see their revenge. Ree almost becomes a casualty of the same greed the two women had but is rescued in time by a young man she had met in the graveyard.

Overall the story kept me engaged and interested. I will be reading book one in the series here soon. I give the novella a B+
