This story was intended to draw you into the friendship between Nel and Sula. I however, could not really relate to either girl - Nel was a push over who let others think for her. The only time I feel she was truy herself was during her marriage, and we heard nothing about that time. Sula on the other hand was self-centred and inconsiderate. She displayed very little emotion towards anyone or anything. I felt that Morrison was trying to create this unbreakable bond between the girls, but I did not feel it. To me the characters fell flat, and there was little to hold my attention.
It is funny, but despite not relating to, nor actually enjoying, this book I still found the writing to be quite good. Morrison writes with an easy, almost poetic flow. The story sweeps you along, with bits of beauty and grace naturally coming along. Descriptions have you standing beside the main characters, seeing what they see. I will look for more by Morrison, hoping to find this beautiful writing applied to the main ideas of the story, rather than simply the setting and the extras
