Disclosure statement: I received this book from the publisher.
The Second Empress is an attempt to look at the inner workings of Napoleon Bonaparte's palace through the eyes of three characters: his Austrian born 2nd wife, his sister and his sister's Haitian born chamberlain. At times 'The Second Empress' really pulled me in and created anticipation as each character takes a turn telling the story. Unfortunately, especially later in the book, the speed of telling Napoleon's history is increased dramatically and the details that made the characters so appealing early on is lost. I spent much of the final 1/4 of this book thinking about what I would have done to make it better rather than enjoying the story and characters. A shame since another 100 or so pages and a few more characters and this may have been a 5 star gem.
