I've been a Marcus Samuelsson fan for years, so I was excited to read his memoir. What I enjoyed most about the book was his candor. Samuelsson reveals that he fell short as a son and a father because of his overwhelming desire to achieve success as a chef. Too often the subjects of memoirs gloss over their failings and only pay homage to their successes.
He reveals the sacrifices that must be made in order to achieve his level of success and recognition. My only criticism of the book is that the writing is too simplistic. Samuelsson credits author Veronica Chambers with helping him put pen to paper and I was surprised to learn that considering that the writing is just so straightforward. Overall, this memoir was thoroughly enjoyable.
