bookshelves: caring, family, emotions

The book is about a young raccoon about to start his first day of school and is nervous and scared to leave home with his things that he is familiar with. His mother encourages him that he will be able to play with new toys and books and make new friends. She tells him a 'secret' about a kissing hand. She kisses his hand and tells him that that kiss from her will be with him throughout his day whenever he wants to feel her love. Chester also gives his mother a 'kissing hand' so that his love will be with her throughout her day also.
I would read this story during the first week of school. We will discuss how we feel about being at new places without our things from home. We will explore the classroom and find our favorite thing that is in the classroom that reminds us of home and makes us feel comfortable in school.
