It helps to have brushed up on the previous adventures before starting this last book (which I didn't do), though it's not a prerequisite.

Of course what one really wants to know is who dies and did good or evil prevail in the end--skipping to the last chapter is not as satisfying as suffering the adventure with Harry Potter, so I don't recommend it. The epilogue at the end, I thought, was unnecessary. I would have preferred that it was left to our imaginations.

Re-read again in 2010 previous to watching the new movie based on the book. I would recommend that, since the movie skips over quite a bit.
