liked it

I was so looking forward to this; I love Sarah Vowell's writing and early America is a particular interest of mine. But, while it had its moments, it did not live up to its predecessor, Assassination Vacation. For one thing, Vowell repeats herself a little too often for my taste. But, more importantly, there are no chapter breaks! I know this seems like a minor quibble, but with a voice as conversational as Vowell's, the prose blurs almost unintelligibly if I'm not allowed a section break in which to breathe, consider what she just wrote, digest it, and move on to a discernibly different section. It made getting through the book much harder than it had to be, considering how many things it had going for it. Nevertheless, Vowell is a really fresh voice and I will definitely check out whatever she writes next.
