I heard Lanchester interviewed on NPR this summer, and, having lived and worked in a much grittier South London than the one Lanchester describes in this novel set in 2008, I was interested in reading it. The fictional device Lanchester devised to bring these disparate characters' lives into focus worked well, I thought, and the time and the place and the people are all vividly detailed. The story I found most touching was the one most untouched by the boom, the stateless woman transit cop. A thoughtful novel and a good read.
