I've read many great dog-lover books, like "A Dog's Purpose" and "The Art of Racing in the Rain" and "Because of Winn-Dixie." This isn't nearly as good as those - there was an emotional disconnect with the story (though I loved the chapters written from the dog's perspective). The human protagonist isn't very sympathetic (would someone really try to substitute a different dog for someone's missing pet and think it is fine??) and he doesn't meet the canine protagonist for far too long (after 100 pages. Yikes!). Then there's a slow build to their relationship without enough of a payoff.

Also, while I know the author is trying to build tolerance for pit bulls/fighting dogs, and I appreciate that effort, I didn't like that it was done at the expense of labrador retrievers, since I am the proud mom of the greatest dog of all time, who happens to be a lab mix. So perhaps that clouded my judgement as well.

"I danced a little on my front feet, his voice was so calm and kibbley."
