Dark Horse: The Surprise Election and Political Murder of President James A. Garfield
Nov 07, 2008
I found this an interesting book simply because I knew very little about it. The story around the personal feuds and political patronage is interesting. How Garfield was nominated and ultimately became President is another compelling story. Ackerman did a good job of researching and describing the activities that led the deranged Charles Guiteau to assassinate President Garfield early in his presidency. Access to political officials in the gilded age was very interesting to consider. It seemed almost anyone could get face time with the president, even a strange man seeking an appointment like Charles Guiteau. If you’re a student of obscure history this is a book worth reading.
