** spoiler alert ** This was an amazing and well written novel about Faith Dunckle, who had originally been a character in short story from collection "Circling the Drain". Faith is a sophomore in high school and a former fat girl. After a brutal sexual assault, Faith tries to kill herself and winds up in a psych ward of a hospital for 7 months. While there, she sheds the weight ... but gains the ghost of her former self who goes everywhere she does, but is invisible to everyone else. This is all in the backstory. The real story starts when the now thinner Faith returns to school and is hit on by one of the boys who aided in her assault. Egged on by her ghost, Faith commits a violent act against the boy, and then must run away. She and her ghost join a traveling circus where Faith adopts a new name (Annabelle) and eventually deals with that has happened and really does make the transformation to the person she wants to be. It's a dark (very) dark fairy tale/ ghost story about a girl who is basically haunting herself and keeping her silence about her attack and dealing with as best as she can. The writing is so good I didn't want it to end ... so I bought the author's short story collection.

Unfortunately, the author tragically died in a plane crash while promoting this book. So I'll have to savor those stories.
