I like Carpenter's Gothic a lot. Like all of Gaddis's work, it's difficult to comprehend on a first reading -- but it's pretty short by Gaddis standards (under 300 pages), so it doesn't seem a Herculean task to give it a second (or third) read. Once it starts to sink in, it's very funny -- and of course has a lot to say about 20th-century American culture, especially the media.
