I like V. I., and the Chicago stuff, and her friends. The Chicago stuff is always well done - this time the gritty South Side where she grew up is the setting. The descriptions of the girls on the basketball team - the ethnic mix, their lives, their families, their struggles - are very believable. Less believable are the villains in the piece - a multi-millionaire evangelical tycoon who ruthlessly exploits his workers while maintaining his own moral superiority, and his squabbling money grubbing offspring. The were an interesting concept that degenerated into stereotypes pretty quickly.
