did not like it

Anne Bishop seems to be the kind of writer you either love or love to hate. Her writing is inconsistent in some ways but consistent in others. For example I loved her Dark Jewels trilogy but this book is so bad I have no words to describe my hate for it. All her books have the same basic premise but this just didn't resonate at all.

It started out ok but soon the disappointment soon set in. First I am so sick of her running theme of men being evil sadistic women haters, except for the hero of course, who in this book is a dopey dull witted bore. I was hoping he'd die but oh well...

The only interesting character in the story, at least the part that I read because this book was a ball banger that I refused to finish, was Lucian. Here was a complex man who had underdog tendencies and had a personality that could be made heroic and redeemed. But Anne Bishop chose to just toss him to the curb. If an author can't tell who her best characters are then what hope is there?

Now I know a lot of people love these books but I guess they see something in them that I just cant fathom. Maybe some people like to wallow in all the blood and guts and torture that is simply overdone in most of her books. At first reading it's shocking and powerful, but by the second or third dose I just don't care anymore. When violence against women is ho-hum then the writer has failed.

Of course you never get any plot twists in these stories, the bad man never dies until the very last moment and the good girl always prevails with her perfection in tact. So what is the point of reading this again?

As soon as it was clear that Lucian was not the hero of this story I was like "peace"! And upside the wall it went.
