Definitely not a whodunit. It's more a character-driven murder story -- in which all the characters are disagreeable people!

I suppose, after writing so many mysteries, Heyer wanted to write one about a murderer who wasn't caught. This makes perfect sense, and the book is an interesting read, though it's hard not to just compare it to the regular mysteries and gripe about the elements that aren't there. I think if the characters were more likeable the story would stick in my mind longer, but as it is, it's more like an elaborate character exercise than anything else.
