A man with a funny name's figurative and, eventually, literal descent into hell, with many anatomical detours along the way. There aren't any redeeming qualities to be found in the character of Bunny Munro, a traveling sex-addicted salesman whose affairs usher along his wife's suicide, culminating in a road trip with his young son whom he abandons when it's time for him to do his clients (and waitresses, and his friend's girlfriend).

Grief does little to change Bunny, even as the physical spectre of his dead wife looms over him. He's a horrible father in a cycle of horrible fathers it seems. This is exactly the story I'd expect to read from the man who wrote and sung "The Mercy Seat," and for the first half of the book, I wasn't disappointed. It's scuzzy in a retro, throwback sort of way, exactly as Cave styles himself -- right down to the gelled forelock of Bunny's hair, his yellow car, doing business with a prostitute in a dingy hotel room. But as the book goes on it became clear that the book doesn't have too much to really say about all its degradation. Bunny's nothing more than a dick (again: literally and figuratively) and then he hallucinates and sees the end of his life -- his "eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" -- and then he dies. Well all right then.

eden I am interested to see what you think of this.

rachel I know you hated it and understand why, but I am enjoying it so far. Enjoying it a lot actually, hah. I think it could go to (more?) ridiculous places and hope it does not, however.
