Shatter by Michael Robotham is the third book of the Joseph O'Loughlin mystery series set in present-day England. Joe no longer has his private practice in London, due to "Mr. Parkinson". He and his family moved out of the city to Somerset. He will lecture at the university, and Julianna will continue her job (which involves travel). Immediately following his first class, he's asked to help police with a "jumper". A nearly naked woman in tremendous distress is on the edge of a bridge. Joe tries to talk to her, but she jumps.

Joe is sad he could not save her; cannot refuse when her daughter Darcy demands Joe find out who killed her mother. Her unusual behavior in her last hours was commanded over the phone. Joe urges police detective Veronica Cray to investigate murder, not write off the case as suicide. When another woman dies in unusual circumstances, it becomes clear that a killer was commanding the victims by phone for their last hours. Why the two women were chosen is completely unknown. The police dig deep into each victim's background for clues. Joe wants to understand what hold the killer has over the women. His friend Vincent Ruiz, retired detective, joins Joe's hunt.

When a third woman behaving erratically and dangerously is traced by the police, Joe is on the spot, and he knows what to tell the woman, to try and save her. He and Ruiz have traced the connection between the women, and they painstakingly pursue evidence until they identify the killer. Now to catch him.

Suddenly the case becomes deadly personal for Joe. As chapters alternate thriller style between the killer's actions and the chase by police, Joe and Ruiz, suspense ratchets up. Joe's training and career is all about healing broken minds; the killer is professionally trained to break minds, and out for revenge.

For full enjoyment, read the series in order. Learn of Joe's life as he treated patients, his relationship with Julianna, how he met Vincent Ruiz, and how they came to deeply trust and respect each other.
