As the prequel to the Shadowlands series, this was quite enjoyable. Dante was an angel/Sentinel who was cast out of Heaven because he was infected by a Wraith. As the evil slowly progressed through his system, he had to battle both sides of himself - the good and the evil. He finally found the last piece he needed to perhaps transform himself back into who he was when his brother gives him a new mission - protect the human, Alyssa.

Alyssa was completely unaware of the supernatural, despite her grandmother being the most powerful mage. When she was confronted by an evil witch, Dante had to convince her to put her trust in him and the unknown. She was forced to accept everything that was hidden from her. Not only were the stories her grandma told her true, but she herself was a powerful force... a syphon.

This new-to-me author gave me a story about mythical beings, soulmates, action, and redemption. It was a great precursor of the story to come and I hope the author publishes more about these characters soon.
