I really enjoyed the book, again a fairly easy read of American history and grappling with problems and issues that have been part of our history from the beginning - individual rights, racism, making America a country with libery and justice for all. Looks at various presidents who had to rise to challenges in their time to keep the American dream alive. Meacham sees American history in a progressive light and believes 'our better angels' will guide us through the current polarities and problems. He doesn't see history as a steady movement in one direction, but a series of ups and downs which can only be evaluated in the long term. Certainly some of the divisions in American politics today have a long history here. They are not new problems, but are now ours.
