I'm incredibly surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I've been intimidated by it for years and never worked up the courage to read it. However, I don't recommend reading it on your own. Taking a class on this novel was the only way in which I could grasp what was going on. Fortunately, I had an amazing professor at Cambridge University who gave us so much background behind every chapter and historical context surrounding Joyce's writing, including the early twentieth century fascination with stream-of-consciousness. I doubt very much I would have understood much at all on my own. In fact, I would most likely have given up after a few chapters. Amazing writing in different forms as sort of its own experimental genre, and many commentaries on the state of Irish nationalism and Irish identity.
