** spoiler alert ** A wonderfully touching story of August's 5th grade year - his first year in school. August's face is deformed, even after numerous surgeries... He is loved by his parents, older sister, and dog... and all things considered, has pretty good self esteem...

We see most through his eyes, though two of his friends, one enemy, his sister and his sister's friend all get a chapter or two from their point of view.

Palacio does a marvelous job of giving us insight into the emotions and minds of them all - the fear, the ordinary, the slow acceptance of getting used to the abnormal to see the real person, that people for the most part aren't mean or bad, just need a bit of time, the humor, the pain, the joy, the pleasure.

Though I cried at a few places, I cried the hardest when their dog died - hmmm.... the dog that loved and accepted them all just the way they were...
