it was amazing

Carter is a gifted writer, using complex language to spin a complex plot. Clearly he and his staff did an enormous amount of research about the individuals and politics of post-Civil War Washington. Yes, it's historical fiction but it's wrapped in a mystery that felt like an onion: one layer hid 7 more. One criticism: by the end of the story, Jonathan was treated as if he'd lost all intelligence along the way. I understand that Abigail was quite brilliant, but eventually she needed to patiently explain everything to him as if he were a child; I could almost hear her roll her eyes.
