I found this book to be a bit up and down. The world setting is quite good, and the Aztec mythology is certainly not overused as a background, but the story tended to meander a lot, and it was only in the final quarter of the book that the pace really picked up.

Buckell has written several follow up novels based in the same world setting, and this first book has a fairly open ending.
