The Forgetting Tree is a powerful novel with unforgettable characters. Claire and Minna are so dissimilar yet so much alike in the forces that bring them together. The growth of Claire who comes to the ranch as a naive young bride who wants to read and play the piano to a force stronger than the owners and the means of holding it all together is powerful and exciting. The writing is beautiful and evocative. Phrases like,"sometimes love is not enough" stay with you throughout the book and cause you to stop, pause and reflect. There are almost moments when you can smell the citrus. The book has all the elements of a literary saga - love, anger, families, strife, loss, politics and an ending that rings true and real. I heard the author speak at Books in Bloom in Beaver Creek and couldn't wait to read my advance copy. I was not disappointed!
