Pacing problems and repetition were what kept this interesting take on the selling of souls as just a three star read. The protag kept rehashing, in his mind and in conversation, his skepticism about whether his soul had really been sold and would be taken in a matter of weeks on his birthday. The book felt padded out by this recurring rehashing, and that was annoying, like a tease that lasted the entire book. Through constant repetition, the ominous birthday sale was so hyped as the whole point of the book that I spent the entire book impatient to find out whether his soul had really been sold, just to shut up the constant rehashing. This was the big negative in a book that actually has a lot of well-written, interesting and creative scenes. I'm hopeful that the sequel won't suffer from this defect.
