This book has a fantastic premise - a high-stakes treasure hunt within a virtual reality world that has become, for many, more real than the actual real world. It sets itself up for all sorts of interesting Matrix-esqe real world vs simulated world conflicts. I don't mind the incessant 80s and nerd name-dropping; while it doesn't do much to forward the plot, it sets the atmosphere, and it was awfully fun whenever I caught one of the references. The book starts slow and takes a while to set up the premise for the world, but once things picked up, I couldn't put it down.

The problem was that, in the end, the book didn't really deliver. (view spoiler) I think in a different book, the resolution wouldn't have bothered me nearly as much, but the first half started out so promising that I couldn't help but set my expectations pretty high.
