Heather Brewer built a solid reputation for herself with her first series, The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod, about a young man who attempts to get through high school as a good and conscientious vampire despite an ominous prophecy. The Slayer Chronicles is a unique companion series that offers the perspective of the vampire slayers, one in particular, Joss MacMillan. From friend to mortal enemy the series promises to deliver a thrilling, action-packed intersection of the lives of Vladimir Tod and Joss as each begins to realize who the other is and what that will mean.

First Kill is action packed and gripping from the start. Although I found the writing to be stiff in some places, overall it was a fast read. It will have great appeal to fans of the Vladimir Tod series or to those who like their stories action-packed, gruesome, and violent. Killing vampires is no easy task nor is learning how to do so. These are not the sparkly, romantic vampires of Twilight. This can be read as a stand-alone series.
