This was an intriguing book. Despite, or perhaps because of, the constant narrative of the main character, I found myself compellingly curious about him – what makes him tick, what will he do next? He is no stereotype; although it could have been easy to write him that way. He is in part frighteningly familiar, but thankfully (phew!) not. Anthony has really explored inside his character’s head but without losing sight of the plot’s momentum. If you love stories where a character’s day goes from bad to worse, this is a good one. Also loved the touch of humour with multiple raw metaphors such as “the sun pierces me like a fork”. Fantastic! Somehow it made me feel I was in a film noir script. Don't get me wrong - it is very contemporary, very now.
