Harper Blaine died several years ago, but the Guardian Beast was not done with her and brought her back to life to walk between the worlds. Now Harper is a Greywalker, able to pierce the veil between the physical world and the paranormal world. She makes her living investigating those cases requiring suspension of belief. In this case, a ship has returned after being missing for 27 years, all hands presumed dead. The insurance company wants to know why it's back and who to charge with fraud and the Seattle PD wants to know who was killed and how. Rey Solis, a Seattle homicide detective and Harper go to the boat and it becomes immediately apparent that something magical killed those on board. Like most police officers, Rey is skeptical, but as things become really weired, Rey figures out Harper does know what she is doing. The reader learns mores about Quinton's background; he has to back up Harper as she and Rey head out to the San Juan straits to combat merfolk, sea witches and the dobhar-chu (Irish water shape-shifters who look like otters). A very entertaining read; another solid entry in this series.
