Immediately after I finished this book I pre-ordered it to make sure I own it in hardcover when it comes back. I know I'll reread it again and would love to introduce it to my pre-teen daughter knowing that she will get something special out of it now and enjoy it more and more over time. The physical descriptions of the Maine town as well make me longing to know such a place. The characters are painted in enough detail to make you wish you had such people in your life. On top of that, the story is poetic, beautiful and moving.
Jennifer is likable from the beginning, showing you her strength in the determined way she explores the discovery of an aunt she never knew she had. Her relationship with her best friend Cleo helps to highlight the type of person she is, which is the type of teenager you'd be proud to raise. As much as she is determined, she is shy, smart, and compassionate. The other characters are well written and lovable, especially the few quirky characters that belong to this village and wish you could see them on the ocean every day, too.
In the unraveling the bigger story of why her mother and aunt haven't spoken in 20 years, the author subtly crafts other characters' love, whether it be the sea, a boat, or long ago unrequited love, displaying human nature. You can see that there's more than one truth that exists, depending on your view point and hope that there are people around to help mediate truces if ever needed. Of course there's Jennifer's experience of first love and the author's descriptions of her feelings makes you wish for a storybook first love. I adored Nathan's character and their developing friendship and conversations. I absolutely envied the nights of reading "lines" of poetry or stimulating or meaningful quotes from books for thoughtful discussion.
This was a beautifully written book where you care about the characters, are not ready for it to end, and really gets you thinking about how much was really in the book. I will definitely be reading this book again.
