really liked it
bookshelves: horror, fantasy

I can't quite decide whether or not The Waste Lands is an improvement over The Drawing of the Three. The Waste Lands arguably features more adventure and action at the expense of characterization. At the end of The Waste Lands (besides being angry at the cliff hanger ending!), I felt that I knew as much about Roland and his ka-tet as I did at the end of The Drawing of the Three. However, this book did feature more of Stephen King's fast-paced fight scenes and action sequences. One can't help but imagine some of the sequences vividly.

Other than the lack of characterization, my main complaint about The Waste Lands is that it still has not explained much of the whos, whys, or wheres. Why is Roland so willing to sacrifice everything to reach the Dark Tower? What awaits him there? I suppose King is saving these answers for later books to keep readers all the way through the series. Despite the lack of answers, I am still enthralled by the Dark Tower series and plan on reading the rest.
