it was amazing
bookshelves: memoir, relationships, travel, inspiration

The best book I've read in a while, this was raw and visceral. The author hits a very low point in her life after her mother dies of cancer and decides, spur-of-the-moment, to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. She has never backpacked before and I winced when I read some of the passages about the weight of her pack, the lack of water, and her lack of backwoods skills. She sets out with an optimism that is soon crushed but she pushes on, walking over a thousand miles while learning "how profoundly the trail would both shatter and shelter me."

Not for everyone, this is an intense book about self-redemption and coming to terms with loss.
