The Year of the Book is reminiscent of the Year of the Dog trilogy by Grace Lin. Anna is an elementary student grappling with growing up, her Chinese identity, and friendships and escapes into books, which serve as companions and a means of escape. Good for a classroom read-aloud with references to children's classics and many text-to-text connections.
