For some reason I was a bit surprised that Augusten Burroughs purported self-help book, This is How: Proven Aid in Overcoming Shyness, Molestation, Fatness, Spinsterhood, Grief, etc., was actually a self-help book with suggestions for overcoming shyness, molestation and the entire catalog of woes that he manages to fit into the title. I suppose I expected his usual humorous takes on these subjects and his own experience with them. But what I found instead was a very earnest, and often touching, attempt to reach out to anyone who might be suffering and offer assistance from one who has also suffered. While that gives the book less general appeal, it does make it very valuable in the hands of the right person. I believe that even though the chapters on overcoming alcoholism and addiction (both of which Burroughs is intimately familiar with) might not resonate with an individual considering suicide, for example, that reader might find the chapter on suicide literally a life-saver. And those of us who appreciate Burrough's other books will also find much hard-earned wisdom throughout this one.
