did not like it
bookshelves: young-adult-lit
Read from June 23 to 30, 2012

I feel bad savaging something so obviously well-intentioned, but the fact remains that Endgame – about bullies and school shootings – is just a mess: so sloppy and wafer-thin that it ends up trivializing the very subject it's supposedly speaking out against. The really sad thing is that the book has potential. There's a compelling story to be found in a first-person account of what it's like to be bullied – and the lengths to which it can drive someone – and I could see such a book having an impact on young adult readers. But Endgame is just silly. By the end I didn't much care about Gray or his tormentors; I kinda wanted space aliens to descend from the sky and vaporize everyone. We desperately need well-written YAL to teach about the dangers of bullying. This book does not qualify.
