3 1/2 Esi Edugyan has quite a way with words. The story is of a group of jazz musicians in Hitler's Germany and the same group in Paris in the 1900's. For some reason, I didn't feel like the characters were fleshed out as well as they could be, but the premise and the writing were great. Short-listed for the Booker prize.
