Lauren Willig's "The Garden Intrigue" is the 9th book in the Red Carnation series. This is a frame story around Emma & Colin 2 friends/lovers in England in 2004 where Emma is researching a piece of story for a paper in the Napoleonic era. The main story involves agents August Whittlesby & Emma Delagardie who end up together in the court of Napoleon as he prepares for a naval invasion of England. The story in England is pretty much run of the mill as Emma learns about the characters in the main story line & tries to decide to take a position in the US & deal with her feelings for Colin. The 19th century plot is a tad more interesting as you have preparations for a masque (think type of play) along with a little espionage & a dueling love story. It's this piece as well as the plot to steal Robert Fulton's plans for a submarine that make the story a quick moving one & somewhat enjoyable. Granted at times there's not much of a plot but this is a series worth investigating to see if any of the prior books would help with the enjoyment of this one.
