** spoiler alert ** I enjoyed most of the book - I was caught up in the rich storytelling of the first half of the book. Unfortunately, the richness tapered off. The last portions of the book, in Jonas' village, felt very sparse. The ending particularly needed more. I didn't believe that Gabriel would suddenly understand that Trademaster's powers were real and that Claire was really his mother from what was said in the book. He needed more convincing to change his mind. I also felt like the scene where he defeated Trademaster wasn't full enough. Would he really be defeated by Gabriel sharing three short anecdotes of how he didn't succeed in destroying people?

I had a similar experience when reading Messenger. Is it just that Lowry isn't as good with endings as she is with the rest of her novels.
