So much better than I remember from my junior year of high school! One of the great purely psychological novels, The Scarlet Letter illustrates how one can do so much with so little; there are really only three characters! Similarly the old fashioned (even by Hawthorne's standards) language and Puritan social strictures give an elegant, sparse framework in which Hawthorne can place his story and its imports.

Plus, as Eve says, Hester Prynne is hot.
