Clear, captivating photographs add both a heart-warming and yet also a heart-wrenching touch to this book about dogs in shelters. This book includes a look at the history of dog shelters and humane societies, reasons why there are so many unwanted dogs today, and what can be done to help the animals and people who work with them. It also encourages people to adopt dogs from shelters, but also to make sure they know what they are getting into before deciding to become a dog owner and the responsibilities that entails.

Good for students who love dogs, people who are considering getting a dog, and could also be helpful for students doing research on topics like puppy mills, no-kill facilities, etc. Text is higher reading level but the photographs help break it up. It's also a bit didactic, but that's to be expected with the subject matter.
