Matt Watter’s ‘Dream Phaze—Germination’ is a fast-paced, sci-fi drama featuring a healthy dose of technology and a fascinating ‘Dream Immersion’ premise.

‘Dream Phaze’ is the story of the husband and wife team of Saxon and Margo, a pair of scientists who have created ‘Dream Immersion,’ a super advanced virtual-reality-based tech that allows users to experience the past and potential future.

Predictably, opposition to the virtually limitless technology arises, and the duo are quickly forced to reconsider their life’s work. Unfortunately, they soon realize that everyone—from their team of ‘codesters,’ family, and even the users themselves—has a very different idea of just what should be done with Dream Immersion.

Well-written and immediately engaging, ‘Dream Phaze’ clips along at an almost breakneck pace. The main narrative is broken up by a series of vignettes offering readers a glimpse into just how powerful a Dream Immersion experience can be. While the story’s length and dialogue-driven plot create the illusion of a ‘quick read,’ ‘Dream Phaze’ poses a ton of intriguing ideas and questions. Unfortunately, Watter’s efficient narrative leaves little room for soul-searching and rumination, and one can’t help but wonder what he could’ve accomplished with another hundred pages or so.

All in all, ‘Dream Phaze’ is a solid sci-fi action/thriller that should appeal to a wide-variety of genre fans. Bonus points for offering a fresh, new take on a tried and true premise.
